Boy, do I have a story to go with this one. My paternal grandmother was so hopped up on "Mother's Little Helper" throughout the 50s it's a wonder she made it through.
And that's having a good husband who actually cared and wasn't abusive.
She just couldn't cope. She went from having a full-time job, living in a bustling Washington DC with the help of her mother (taking care of her two small children), during the war, to all of a sudden, moving to a rural area, to a huge farmhouse, becoming the mother of 4 eventually, managing a household, a farm, a husband, and no work outside the home.
I'm going to write about this and see where it goes. Thanks for sharing this.
