Doctors Still Don’t Listen to Women and It’s Threatening Our Lives

An ER doctor didn’t believe a woman had ovaries removed after she repeatedly told him, and delayed her being properly treated.

This week Insider published a story about a woman in Ohio, Amanda Buschelman, who very easily could have lost her life due to multiple doctors misdiagnosing her condition — appendicitis. I wish I could say this story surprised me but I’ll be honest, as a woman who has spent the majority of her adult life being ignored and harassed by medical professionals, I was just angered.

Buschelman went to her primary care physician (PCP) on January 6th in excruciating pain. After completing an exam, he informed her was unable to treat her in the office, as it was likely she had appendicitis, so he sent her to TriHealth Bethesda Butler Hospital in Hamilton, Ohio. Upon being seen in the ER, she informed the attending physician what her PCP said.

The ER doc performed the same exam, pressing on her abdomen (she reacted, showing pain), and ordered blood work and a CT scan. The results of the blood work and CT were normal. The doctor diagnosed Buschelman with ovarian cysts.

There was one problem with this diagnosis. Buschelman had a full hysterectomy in 2013.
