Middle Aged Job Hunting is No Joke After Being Self Employed Forever
Job seeking has changed so much.
Although I took a job working in a local hotel as a housekeeper last year to earn some extra income, for the most part, I’ve been working for myself for going on 15 years now. Getting that job was kind of a fluke. I didn’t go online to get it, I saw a sign outside the hotel when I stayed there for a couple of days to treat myself, asked for an application, filled it out on the spot, and got the job.
And that’s exactly how I was used to applying for and obtaining a job. While I had searched for gigs/jobs in the past using Craiglist and Backpage, I’ve never really used places like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and the like before now. For freelance writing jobs I pitch editors through writing newsletters, Twitter, or PR firms I work with.
Unfortunately, writing and affiliate marketing income has been abysmal over the last year. I have so many irons in the fire and I am just not able to make ends meet, no matter how hard I’ve been trying — and trust me, I have been busting my ass. So, for months now, I’ve also been applying for remote jobs I could potentially do from home (which was what I preferred to do) and local jobs, using Indeed and ZipRecruiter.
